Polling place review - amended scheme of polling places

Decision Maker: Chief Executive

Decision status: Implemented

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

At its meeting on 13 December 2022 West Suffolk Council agreed to undertake an interim review of polling places, as set out in section 2 of Report number: COU/WS/22/024. Council also authorised the Chief Executive, as Returning Officer, to approve the amended scheme of polling places following the consultation on proposals.

In accordance with the delegation, the Chief Executive has taken the decision to approve the amended scheme of polling places with the changes, as set out in the attached Officer Decision Record.

Decision:

In accordance with the delegation approved by Council on 13 December 2022, and set out in the attached Officer Decision Record, the Chief Executive, as Returning Officer, has taken the decision to approve the amended scheme of polling places with the changes included in the Officer Decision Record.

Reasons for the decision:

Amendments due to polling stations which are not available on 4 May 2023 and some polling stations which do not provide electors with reasonable facilities for voting or are not accessible to electors who are disabled.

Alternative options considered:

None applicable. If suitable venues are not secured for use as polling stations, then voters may be disenfranchised and there is a risk of an election petition. If polling station venues are not accessible to disabled electors, then this may be a breach relating to accessibility under the Equalities Act 2010 and the Election Act 2022.
